ER Episode 2 Season 4 “Something New”

By bcc2009

The second episode opens with Dr. Greene stuck in traffic and seeing a parking spot and rushing to get it, in the process almost hitting Dr. Carter who was walking across the street.  This episode also shows a little more of romance between Nurse Hathaway and Dr. Ross.  While the first episode only showed the Emergency Room, one of the first scenes in episode 2 is Dr. Ross and Nurse Hathaway in bed together.

In this episode Dr. Carter is getting a med – student.  The typical med – student in the show is depicted as an assistant for the doctor basically.  In Carters case his med- student has no interest in dealing with patients because he is getting an MD PhD, which does not involve handling patients.  This is the comedic twist for this episode, Carter who was expecting a person that would help lessen his workload and allow him to do more serious procedures now has someone with no knowledge of patients.

Another main part was Dr. Greene and Nurse Hathaway having to interview people for the desk clerk position.  All the people who were interviewed turned out being horrible and every one of them was the wrong person for the job one way or another.

My favorite part of this episode was watching the interviews for the position of desk clerk.  Every person that was interviewed was not cut out for the job and left Dr. Greene and Nurse Hathaway speechless.  Some of the applicants were so unqualified it was hard to even believe that they would even be thought of for the job.

One major thing that I noticed was different about this Episode was that much of the episode dealt with stuff other than working on patients.  For example the romance part, or finding someone for the vacant desk clerk job.  Much of the episode dealt with these things rather than Emergency cases within the hospital.

This episode also deals with the introduction of a new character Dr. Elizabeth Corday.  She is a surgeon from England who is very confident in her abilities and doesnt let anyone give her orders or walk all over her just because shes new.  Throughout the show her foreign terminology of things confuses nurses and doctors and has to be asked over and over to explain what she means, this causes some confusion in trauma rooms.

I rate this episode a 5 because of the new character development of Dr. Corday although a little obnoxious, I like the confidence she has as a doctor and her attitude of taking nothing from nobody. The comedic value of the desk clerk interviews also made this episode great.
